Speed up Your WordPress Website
There are many tools out there that can be used when it comes to speeding up your WordPress website. However, not all tools and .php files are created equally. Therefore, some optimization tools that work for one website may not work for the other. Part of the reason why is because themes are coded differently. Some come bloated with code whereas you have to get your hands dirty by trying to prioritize above the fold content, concatenate files, etc. just so your site is not only user-friendly but loads in record time. As a web developer, I have grown to love WordPress because it is a great cms and there are many plugins that will assist you, not only with SEO but plenty of options from custom menus and accelerated mobile pages to e-commerce and more. Now let’s talk about the custom coding options and which plugins I used to help this website load in just under 5 seconds.
Tools of the Trade
As you browse the web you will find oodles of great plugins that will help your website in terms of page speed and y slow. Finding the best plugin for your website requires searching and extensive testing because compatibility is important.First and foremost you should design your website with your potential visitors in mind. A user first approach is important because if it takes your website more than 10 seconds to load that’s not a good thing. Why… because we live in a right now society and just about everyone has a need for speed when they’re looking for something online. If your site shows up at the top of search results people are expecting to visit a webpage that loads seamlessly and is easy to navigate. With that being said this website uses 4 optimization/ SEO plugins… Autoptimize, WP Disable, Remove query Strings and Yoast SEO all paired with Cloudflare’s CDN (content delivery network).
Recommended Plugins and Settings
Now don’t get me wrong you can do SEO the old fashioned way or you can use plugins, but I did both. My first install was Yoast SEO plugin which is really cool because it comes with video tutorials on and has a nifty step by step setup option. This plugin is quite popular and has over 1 million+ active installs. With it, you can set up your XML sitemaps, create cornerstone content with cool SEO analysis and more. Visit the plugin site for additional details by clicking here. The next plugin I installed is called remove query strings which work out of the box! No setup is required. Just install it and then activate.
Next, I tried a plugin called WP Disable which has become a new love and works beautifully. You can easily remove access bloat from your website and compress images. There is even a caching option. Below I have included a screenshot which displays settings I personally recommend. I believe they will help your site too!
Wait There’s More
As you can see I have not ticked every single setting because some things are not needed here. However, as I mentioned before… test to see which settings work for your website. These options work wonders for reducing database calls which will, in fact, speed up your WordPress website. We’re not done just yet. Keep scrolling to check out a few Autoptimize plugin settings.
There are some Autoptimize settings that will be selected by default once you have activated the plugin, but there are a few other options that will come in handy. For the main tab Under HTML option √Optimize HTML Code. Under CSS options optimize CSS code, generate data URI for images, and also aggregate inline CSS. Under CDN options if you’re using Cloudflare you do not need to input any information there. For Misc. options tick both available checkboxes. Finally, for extra, under google fonts leave as is.
Check your Page speed and improve YSlow
Websites and tools I recommend are Gtmetrix, Google Pagespeed insights, and Pingdom tools. Just to get a glimpse of just how fast this website loads I have included a little snapshot. I am still working out a few kinks in terms of Yslow improvement, but getting there. If you like this post and feel it was helpful or perhaps you have questions please comment and share.
